Today I called an addiction helpline. I don’t know what came over me, but I had nowhere else to turn and it was the only way I knew how to help myself. I’m sixteen years old and I started using marijuana three years ago. It’s gotten to the point where I can’t control it anymore and I feel like I need someone to talk to. I am ashamed of my choices and I do not want to talk to my family or my friends. I’m afraid that I will get into trouble or they will feel like I’ve let them down or they have let me down. They haven’t. I just made some mistakes. At school they pass around these fliers for a alcohol addiction helpline. So I came home today, locked myself in my room and called the cocaine addiction helpline.

Once in a while, events in our lives disappoint us and make us sad. Having lost someone very important could lead one to say ”I am so depressed.” Some people utter that depression feels like a black curtain of despair coming down over their lives. Although feeling depressed once in our lives is normal, chronic depression occurs among people who are not able to recover from the normal cycle of distress. They are those individuals who have not coped up from stress.

Addiction, be it with drugs or alcohol is a subtle yet serious problem in our society today. There is a steady increase on the number of people who are in the pits of addiction. We may not see it as a trouble as long as they are not affecting and hurting other people. However, we may not also be aware of the fact that through addiction or drug abuse, the person is hurting and destroying his/her own self.
